⚠️ BMW Group Position

BMW Group prescribes fuel tank removal and/or fuel pump access as the procedures for accessing fuel tank contents.

BMW warranty explicitly excludes damage from improper fuel use. BMW ISTA/TIS (service information) documents specific fuel system access procedures that USIFDA certified technicians follow.

BMW Fuel Pump Access

Most BMW models manufactured after 2004 have a fuel pump access panel under the rear seat (saddle tank designs) or in the trunk area. This allows fuel pump module removal without complete tank drop in many cases.

⚠️ BMW Saddle Tank Design

Many BMW models use saddle-style fuel tanks that wrap around the rear axle/driveshaft tunnel. These tanks have two fuel pump modules (left and right) connected by a transfer pump. Complete draining requires accessing both sides.

⚠️ BMW Diesel Engines - Critical Warning

BMW diesel engines (xd/d designation; limited US availability—consult model year) use extremely high-pressure common rail fuel injection systems (up to ~36,000 psi). These systems are exceptionally sensitive to fuel contamination:
