⚠️ BMW manufacturer position

BMW requires fuel system decontamination per ISTA, including tank draining at the pump module and replacement of filters; warranty excludes improper fuel. Diesel models require strict adherence to diesel fuel specifications and DEF is separate (not a fuel tank issue).

Misfuel risk High

Gasoline in a US 328d diesel is a high-severity event—do not start. Gasoline 3 Series are common; diesel-in-gasoline is less common but still requires full drain if diesel was added.

If the engine was not started

Keep ignition OFF. Tow for tank drain; on 328d, avoid priming the low-pressure lift pump with wrong fuel.

If the engine was started

328d: assume HP pump, injectors, rails, and filters need inspection or replacement. Gasoline turbo: HPFP and injectors may be damaged if diesel was run; flush per BMW bulletin guidance.

Access procedure

  1. Disconnect the negative battery terminal and confirm ignition is OFF.
  2. Release fuel pressure per OEM procedure (relay/fuse or scan tool command—do not crank if wrong fuel is present).
  3. Access the fuel pump/sender module per BMW ISTA repair instructions (often under rear seat or trunk floor).
  4. Drain the tank using OEM-approved fuel transfer equipment connected at the module or service ports.
  5. Replace fuel filter and inspect lines; flush or replace components per contamination severity and BMW guidance.
  6. Reinstall module, reconnect battery, prime the fuel system, and check for leaks before road test.

Frequently asked questions

What should I do if I put the wrong fuel in my BMW 3 Series?

Do not start the engine or cycle the ignition to RUN if the fuel pump may prime. Have the vehicle recovered to a USIFDA Certified Repair Facility and follow BMW service information for tank draining and fuel system inspection.

Does BMW warranty cover misfuel damage on a 3 Series?

No. BMW warranties exclude damage from improper or contaminated fuel. Repairs are typically customer-pay; document the OEM-prescribed remediation procedure.

Can fuel be removed from a 3 Series through the filler neck?

BMW documents fuel recovery via the fuel pump module access and/or tank removal using approved equipment—not filler-neck siphoning. Follow ISTA/TIS or erWin procedures for your model year.

What if I put gas in my BMW 328d?

Do not start the engine. Gasoline in the 328d common-rail system can destroy the high-pressure pump and injectors. Drain the tank and entire low-pressure circuit per ISTA before attempting a start.
