⚠️ BMW manufacturer position
BMW prescribes draining via the fuel pump module and/or tank removal using approved transfer equipment. Misfuel and fuel contamination are excluded from BMW new-vehicle warranty. Follow BMW ISTA/TIS repair instructions for the specific chassis.

Misfuel risk Moderate
US 2 Series models are gasoline-only. Diesel in gasoline is the main cross-fill risk at truck-stop lanes; gasoline in diesel does not apply to US-market 2 Series.
If the engine was not started
Do not start the engine. Do not turn ignition to RUN (fuel pump may prime). Tow to a certified facility; drain tank per ISTA before cranking.
If the engine was started
If incorrect fuel was burned, expect inspection of HPFP, injectors, fuel rail, filters, and possibly catalytic converters; BMW may require component replacement after contamination.
Access procedure
- Disconnect the negative battery terminal and confirm ignition is OFF.
- Release fuel pressure per OEM procedure (relay/fuse or scan tool command—do not crank if wrong fuel is present).
- Access the fuel pump/sender module per BMW ISTA repair instructions (often under rear seat or trunk floor).
- Drain the tank using OEM-approved fuel transfer equipment connected at the module or service ports.
- Replace fuel filter and inspect lines; flush or replace components per contamination severity and BMW guidance.
- Reinstall module, reconnect battery, prime the fuel system, and check for leaks before road test.
Notes
- US 2 Series Convertible ended after 2021; Coupe returned on G42 platform.

Frequently asked questions
What should I do if I put the wrong fuel in my BMW 2 Series?
Do not start the engine or cycle the ignition to RUN if the fuel pump may prime. Have the vehicle recovered to a USIFDA Certified Repair Facility and follow BMW service information for tank draining and fuel system inspection.
Does BMW warranty cover misfuel damage on a 2 Series?
No. BMW warranties exclude damage from improper or contaminated fuel. Repairs are typically customer-pay; document the OEM-prescribed remediation procedure.
Can fuel be removed from a 2 Series through the filler neck?
BMW documents fuel recovery via the fuel pump module access and/or tank removal using approved equipment—not filler-neck siphoning. Follow ISTA/TIS or erWin procedures for your model year.
