⚠️ Toyota manufacturer position

Toyota documents fuel pump module removal via the under-rear-seat access panel on most Highlander generations. Misfueling and use of improper fuel are excluded from warranty. Follow current TIS procedures for pressure relief, module removal, and refueling.

Misfuel risk Moderate

US Highlanders are overwhelmingly gasoline or hybrid; diesel-in-gasoline is the main forecourt risk if a driver mistakes a green-handled diesel nozzle for gas. Hybrid models add high-voltage safety steps before tank work.

If the engine was not started

Do not start the engine or cycle ignition to RUN if the wrong fuel was added. Have the tank drained using the OEM pump access procedure; replace the fuel filter if gasoline was added to a diesel (not applicable to US gasoline Highlanders).

If the engine was started

If the engine ran on contaminated fuel, Toyota typically requires tank cleaning, new fuel filter, and inspection of injectors and high-pressure pump (if equipped). Hybrid inverter cooling and HV interlocks must be verified per TIS after fuel system service.

Access procedure

  1. Confirm ignition OFF; relieve fuel pressure per TIS (fuel pump relay/fuse, crank until stall if directed)
  2. Disconnect 12 V negative battery terminal; on hybrids, follow Toyota high-voltage disable procedure before interior work
  3. Remove rear seat cushion and access panel screws
  4. Disconnect fuel pump electrical connector and fuel line quick-connects
  5. Remove lock ring with OEM-approved tool; lift pump module carefully to avoid float arm damage
  6. Extract contaminated fuel through module opening using approved equipment
  7. Inspect tank interior; replace pump O-ring and filter per TIS if contaminated fuel was run
  8. Reinstall module, reconnect battery, prime and leak-check before road test

Frequently asked questions

What should I do if I put diesel in my Toyota Highlander?

US Highlanders are gasoline or hybrid. If diesel was added, do not start the engine. Drain the tank using Toyota’s fuel pump access procedure and replace the fuel filter; flush lines per TIS if the pump was energized.

Does the Highlander have a fuel pump access panel?

Most US Highlanders allow fuel pump module removal through a panel under the rear seat without dropping the tank, unless TIS specifies tank removal for your VIN.

Is misfuel covered under Toyota warranty?

No. Toyota classifies incorrect fuel as customer misuse, which is excluded from warranty coverage.

Can a USIFDA mobile unit siphon a Highlander through the filler neck?

No. Anti-siphon hardware and Toyota’s prescribed pump-module access make filler-neck siphoning unreliable and not an OEM-documented procedure.
