⚠️ Fiat manufacturer position
TechAuthority covers 500 fuel module service. Contaminated fuel voids warranty. 500e high-voltage safety applies only to battery service, not fuel.

Misfuel risk Moderate
Small city cars are often rented or borrowed—diesel nozzle mis-selection is the typical US risk on gasoline 500s.
If the engine was not started
Do not start. Drain the small tank completely—residual diesel in a 9 gal tank is a high concentration risk.
If the engine was started
Replace filters and inspect injectors; short-trip urban use may have ingested contamination quickly.
Access procedure
- Relieve fuel system pressure per OEM service information (disconnect pump fuse/relay or use scan tool as specified).
- Disconnect the negative battery cable.
- Access the fuel pump module per OEM (rear seat service hole, trunk floor, or cargo area—varies by model).
- Disconnect fuel lines and electrical connectors at the pump module using line-specific tools.
- Drain the tank into approved Class 3 containers; bond/ground per OSHA 29 CFR 1910.106.
- Inspect the tank interior; replace in-tank filter if contaminated or per OEM.
- Reinstall the pump module with a new seal; reconnect lines and wiring.
- Refill with the correct fuel grade; prime the system and check for leaks before road test (Fiat procedure).
Notes
- 500e: misfuelRisk not applicable to traction battery; page covers gasoline 500.

Frequently asked questions
What if I put diesel in a Fiat 500?
Do not start the 1.4L gas engine. Drain via OEM pump access—the tank is small so act before the fuel pump primes.
Does the Fiat 500 Abarth differ for fuel service?
Tank and module access are shared with the standard 500; follow the same TechAuthority fuel system section.
Can I use E15 in a Fiat 500?
Follow the owner manual and fuel door label for US 500 model years; after contamination service, refill with the specified grade.
