Misfuel risk Moderate
ICE Charger and Challenger are gasoline-only. Diesel nozzle errors at truck stops are the primary US misfuel scenario for these models.
If the engine was not started
Do not start. Drain via OEM pump access; on Hellcat trims use care with high-capacity lines and filters per TechAuthority.
If the engine was started
Diesel or severe contamination may require injector, pump, and line replacement; perform fuel system pressure tests before return to customer.
Access procedure
- Relieve fuel system pressure per OEM service information (disconnect pump fuse/relay or use scan tool as specified).
- Disconnect the negative battery cable.
- Access the fuel pump module per OEM (rear seat service hole, trunk floor, or cargo area—varies by model).
- Disconnect fuel lines and electrical connectors at the pump module using line-specific tools.
- Drain the tank into approved Class 3 containers; bond/ground per OSHA 29 CFR 1910.106.
- Inspect the tank interior; replace in-tank filter if contaminated or per OEM.
- Reinstall the pump module with a new seal; reconnect lines and wiring.
- Refill with the correct fuel grade; prime the system and check for leaks before road test (Dodge procedure).
Notes
- This page covers gasoline ICE Charger/Challenger. The electric Charger Daytona has no gasoline tank.
- Some fleet Challengers use E85—verify fuel door badge after service.

Frequently asked questions
I put diesel in my Hemi Charger—what happens if I start it?
Diesel will not burn correctly in a gasoline Hemi and can damage injectors and the fuel pump. Do not start—drain and flush per TechAuthority.
Is the 2024 electric Charger covered here?
No. The BEV Charger has no fuel tank. Wrong-fluid issues involve other reservoirs (e.g., washer fluid)—treat separately.
Challenger and Charger use the same tank procedure?
Procedures are similar on shared platforms but always follow the exact model-year TechAuthority section for your VIN.
