GM truck fuel service often requires tank lowering—consult GMSI for cab/bed/tank combination. Wrong fuel excluded from warranty.

Misfuel risk High

Light-duty Silverado with Duramax diesel is a primary US gasoline-in-diesel misfuel risk at travel centers.

If the engine was not started

Do not start Duramax if gasoline was added; avoid cycling key-on fuel pump.

If the engine was started

Expect HP fuel system component inspection on diesel; gasoline trucks need filter and pump evaluation.

Access procedure

  1. Depressurize the fuel system per GM service information; disconnect battery negative.
  2. Access fuel module via under-seat/trunk panel or perform tank lowering if required for the platform.
  3. Disconnect electrical connector and fuel line fittings; use line plugs as specified.
  4. Remove lock ring and lift module; extract wrong fuel with approved recovery equipment.
  5. Inspect tank and lines; replace filters if contamination reached the engine supply circuit.
  6. Reinstall module with new seal; verify connections and perform leak check.
  7. Prime system and clear DTCs per GMSI before returning vehicle to service.

Frequently asked questions

How do I know if my Silverado is diesel?

Check the fuel door label, badging (Duramax), and window sticker. Diesel uses the green/yellow handled truck lane at many stations.

Does DEF go in the fuel tank?

No. DEF has a separate blue-capped port. If DEF enters the fuel tank, follow GM contamination procedures—do not start.
