Misfuel risk Moderate
Large gasoline tank on family SUV — diesel-in-gasoline misfuel is the common US forecourt error.
If the engine was not started
Do not start engine; drain both tank sections if dual-cell not equipped — XC90 is single tank SPA.
If the engine was started
Full fuel system inspection on turbo DI; PHEV HV ventilation check if fuel vapor present in cabin.
Access procedure
- Relieve fuel pressure; disconnect battery
- HV disable on T8 before interior work
- Access pump module under third-row or second-row floor per VIDA
- Drain contaminated fuel; replace filter
- Reinstall with new seal; prime and leak-test
Notes
- Earlier US XC90 V8 models use same general SPA/P2 access patterns per year in VIDA

Frequently asked questions
Does the XC90 use diesel in the US?
Current US XC90 lineup is gasoline and Recharge PHEV. Do not add diesel.
Can I siphon an XC90 at the gas station?
Anti-siphon and Volvo’s module procedure make filler-neck extraction unsuitable for certified work.
Does the XC90 Recharge T8 share the same tank access as gasoline models?
Yes, but VIDA requires high-voltage disable before interior fuel module service on T8 trims.
