Misfuel risk Moderate

Gasoline and PHEV XC40s face standard diesel-in-gasoline risk. Recharge BEV has no fuel tank — treat poured gasoline as contamination near HV components.

If the engine was not started

ICE/PHEV: do not start. BEV: do not charge if combustible fluid entered ports.

If the engine was started

ICE/PHEV: inspect HP fuel hardware. BEV: tow for inspection if engine bay or battery area contacted by gasoline.

Access procedure

  1. Identify powertrain (fuel door vs charge port label)
  2. ICE/PHEV: relieve pressure, disconnect 12 V, access pump under load floor
  3. Drain tank through module opening; replace filter if needed
  4. PHEV: HV disable before interior access
  5. BEV: if gasoline poured, do not charge — inspect per VIDA contamination bulletin path
  6. Reinstall, prime, leak-check ICE/PHEV

Frequently asked questions

Does every XC40 have a gas tank?

No. XC40 Recharge is battery electric without a fuel tank. Check the badge and fuel door.

What if I put gas in my XC40 Recharge?

Do not charge or drive. Gasoline near the charge port or HV hardware requires Volvo inspection.

Does USIFDA certify filler-neck extraction on the XC40?

No. Gasoline XC40 models use Volvo VIDA fuel module access; anti-siphon hardware blocks neck siphoning.
