⚠️ CRITICAL: Ford Ranger Misfuel (US)

The US-market Ford Ranger is gasoline-only. Misfuel risk is primarily diesel added to a gasoline Ranger:

⚠️ Ford Position - Ranger

Ford prescribes fuel tank removal as the procedure for accessing Ranger fuel tank contents.

The Ford Ranger does not have a fuel pump access panel. Full tank drop is required for fuel contamination remediation. Ford warranty excludes "damage from using fuel other than recommended."

USIFDA Recommended Method

✓ Method B: Full Tank Drop/Removal

This is the ONLY approved method for Ford Ranger.

The Ranger does not have a fuel pump access panel. Ford prescribes complete fuel tank removal to access tank contents.

✗ Filler Neck Extraction

Not Approved - The Ranger filler neck contains anti-siphon devices that prevent and can be damaged by extraction equipment. This is not a Ford-prescribed method.

Ford-Prescribed Procedure

"Fuel Tank Removal (Ranger)

  • Relieve fuel system pressure
  • Disconnect battery ground cable
  • Drain fuel tank using approved fuel recovery equipment
  • Raise vehicle and support safely
  • Disconnect fuel filler pipe
  • Disconnect quick-connect fittings at fuel lines
  • Disconnect fuel pump electrical connector
  • Position suitable jack under fuel tank
  • Remove fuel tank strap bolts
  • Lower fuel tank"
— Ford Motorcraft Service / PTS

Procedure Steps (USIFDA Standard)

  1. Secure vehicle in safe location, ignition OFF, keys removed
  2. Assess contamination type — confirm diesel in gasoline
  3. Relieve fuel system pressure per Ford procedure
  4. Disconnect battery negative terminal
  5. Raise vehicle on four-post hoist
  6. Remove underbody protection and heat shields
  7. Disconnect filler neck from tank
  8. Disconnect fuel lines using Ford quick-connect tool
  9. Disconnect fuel pump/sender electrical connector
  10. Support tank with transmission jack
  11. Remove tank strap mounting bolts
  12. Lower tank and remove from vehicle
  13. Drain all contaminated fuel to approved container
  14. Remove fuel pump module for tank inspection
  15. Flush tank interior
  16. Replace fuel filter
  17. Reinstall tank with new seals per torque specifications
  18. Refill with correct gasoline per Ford specification
  19. Prime system and test for leaks
  20. Start engine and verify operation
  21. Test drive and final inspection

⚠️ EcoBoost — If Engine Was Run on Diesel

Ford's 2.3L EcoBoost uses turbocharged direct injection. Diesel in gasoline can damage the high-pressure fuel pump, injectors, and catalysts if the engine is run. Consult Ford Motorcraft Service / PTS for inspection and flush requirements.

Related US Ford Diesel Trucks

For gasoline in diesel on Ford Super Duty Power Stroke models, see F-250 / F-350 Super Duty. F-150 3.0L Power Stroke diesel (2018–2021) also requires diesel-specific remediation — consult Ford PTS.

Parts Typically Required

Part Notes
Fuel Filter Always replace - Ford Genuine or equivalent
Fuel Tank Seal/Gasket Replace if disturbed
Fuel Pump Module O-ring Replace on reassembly
Quick-Connect Fittings Inspect, replace if damaged

If engine was run: Additional parts may include high-pressure fuel pump, injectors (x4 or x6), fuel rails, fuel lines depending on damage assessment.

Estimated labor Time

Scenario Typical Hours
Tank drop, drain, filter replacement (engine NOT started) 3 - 4.5 hours
Full system flush (engine started briefly) 5 - 7 hours
Fuel system component replacement 8+ hours (varies by damage)
