Misfuel risk Moderate
US IS models are gasoline only. Wrong fuel or water contamination requires draining before the HP fuel system ingests contaminants.
If the engine was not started
Do not crank the engine; arrange panel-access drain immediately.
If the engine was started
Inspect HP pump, rails, and injectors; replace filters and run fuel quality checks per Lexus manual.
Access procedure
- Relieve fuel pressure using Lexus/Toyota prescribed steps; disconnect battery negative.
- Remove rear seat cushion or trunk access panel to reach the fuel pump module cover.
- Disconnect wiring and fuel line quick-connects; plug openings to control vapors (OSHA 1910.106 precautions).
- Remove lock ring and extract pump/sender assembly per Lexus service manual.
- Drain contaminated fuel; inspect tank for debris or water intrusion.
- Install new seal, reassemble, and perform leak check before engine start.
- Clear fuel trim adaptations if required after extensive contamination repair.
Notes
- Second-generation IS shares architecture with Toyota Altezza sold outside the US.

Frequently asked questions
I put diesel in my Lexus IS—what now?
US IS models are not diesel. If diesel was added, do not start the engine and drain the tank using Lexus fuel module procedures.
Does the IS have a capless fuel filler?
Some model years use capless systems—still use module access for contamination recovery, not filler siphoning.
