⚠️ Land Rover manufacturer position

JLR TOPIx prescribes depressurization, approved extraction, and often tank drop with underbody shield removal. Misfuel damage is not warrantable.

Misfuel risk High

Large filler opening and mixed powertrains at US stations make diesel-in-gasoline and gasoline-in-diesel errors costly, especially on turbo-diesel and PHEV builds.

If the engine was not started

Do not start. Drain per TOPIx, replace filters, flush if diesel was added to gasoline or vice versa, refill with correct fuel grade.

If the engine was started

Stop driving. Expect HP fuel pump, injectors, filters, and possible catalyst/DPF work on diesels; PHEV high-voltage assessment if gasoline reached engine while in EV-ready state.

Access procedure

  1. Depressurize fuel system and disconnect 12V/48V per TOPIx
  2. Drain using approved extraction equipment
  3. Raise vehicle and remove underbody protection as required
  4. Disconnect filler neck and fuel lines with JLR tools
  5. Lower tank with transmission jack; extract remaining fuel
  6. Inspect modules and lines; reassemble with new seals; prime and leak-check

Frequently asked questions

I put gas in my diesel Defender — what now?

Do not drive. Full drain per TOPIx, filter replacement, and likely HP pump and injector inspection if the engine ran.

Can I drain a Defender from the filler neck?

Use TOPIx-prescribed extraction and tank procedures; do not force siphon hoses past anti-siphon devices.

Does Defender PHEV still have a fuel tank?

Yes. PHEV models have a gasoline tank for the engine; drain procedures still apply with HV safety steps.
