⚠️ Ram manufacturer position
Ram DT/DS TechAuthority covers tank module access and tank removal. EcoDiesel requires no ignition cycling before drain. Warranty excludes contaminated fuel.

Misfuel risk High
Light-duty Ram diesels are frequently filled at passenger pumps—gasoline-in-diesel is a common US fleet and personal error.
If the engine was not started
On EcoDiesel, do not cycle ignition. Drain tank completely before cranking. On Hemi gasoline, avoid starting if diesel was added.
If the engine was started
EcoDiesel: plan for HPFP, injectors, filters, and possible rail replacement. Gasoline Hemi with diesel run: flush tank, lines, injectors, and catalyst checks per OEM.
Access procedure
- Relieve fuel system pressure and disconnect the negative battery cable.
- Drain accessible fuel through the pump module opening when OEM allows; otherwise prepare for tank removal.
- Raise the vehicle safely; support the fuel tank with OEM-approved equipment.
- Disconnect filler neck, vent, EVAP, and supply/return lines at the tank.
- Lower the tank and empty remaining fuel into approved containers.
- Flush or replace components per contamination severity and OEM limits.
- Reinstall the tank, reconnect all lines, and torque fasteners to specification.
- Refill, prime, and verify fuel pressure and leak-free operation (Ram service information).
Notes
- eTorque mild hybrid Hemi still uses gasoline tank—misfuel applies to gasoline system.
- See ram-2500.html for Cummins HD procedures.

Frequently asked questions
How do I know if my Ram 1500 is EcoDiesel?
Check the fuel door label, window sticker, and badging. EcoDiesel models have a diesel-capable filler and 3.0L V6 diesel under the hood.
I put gas in my EcoDiesel Ram—can roadside dilute it?
No. Do not start the engine. Tow to a USIFDA certified facility for OEM tank drain—common rail damage occurs quickly if started.
Does the Hemi Ram take diesel?
No. Gasoline V6/V8 models require unleaded gasoline per the fuel door—diesel will damage the engine if run.
Where does DEF go on Ram 1500 diesel?
DEF fills a separate blue-capped reservoir—never pour DEF into the diesel fuel tank.
