⚠️ Alfa Romeo manufacturer position

Stellantis TechAuthority documents fuel pump module service and tank removal for the Giulia. Fuel contamination and use of improper fuel void warranty coverage. Do not rely on undocumented filler-neck extraction.

Misfuel risk Moderate

US Giulia is gasoline-only. Diesel nozzle mis-selection at US stations is the main risk; gasoline in a diesel Giulia is not applicable for US-new vehicles.

If the engine was not started

Do not start the engine or cycle ignition to RUN. Have the tank drained via OEM access, dispose of contaminated fuel per EPA used-oil/contaminated fuel rules, and refill with the correct gasoline grade.

If the engine was started

If incorrect fuel was combusted, inspect high-pressure pump, injectors, fuel rail, and filters per TechAuthority; DTCs and fuel trim data guide component replacement.

Access procedure

  1. Relieve fuel system pressure per OEM service information (disconnect pump fuse/relay or use scan tool as specified).
  2. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  3. Access the fuel pump module per OEM (rear seat service hole, trunk floor, or cargo area—varies by model).
  4. Disconnect fuel lines and electrical connectors at the pump module using line-specific tools.
  5. Drain the tank into approved Class 3 containers; bond/ground per OSHA 29 CFR 1910.106.
  6. Inspect the tank interior; replace in-tank filter if contaminated or per OEM.
  7. Reinstall the pump module with a new seal; reconnect lines and wiring.
  8. Refill with the correct fuel grade; prime the system and check for leaks before road test (Alfa Romeo procedure).

Frequently asked questions

What if I put diesel in my Giulia at a US gas station?

Do not start the car. US Giulias are gasoline models—diesel will not combust correctly and can damage the high-pressure fuel system if run. Drain and flush per Stellantis procedures.

Does the Giulia have a fuel pump access panel?

Most US Giulia sedans allow pump module access from under the rear seat per TechAuthority, avoiding full tank drop when contamination is caught early.

Will Alfa Romeo warranty cover misfuel damage?

No. Stellantis explicitly excludes damage from contaminated or improper fuel; repairs are typically out-of-pocket or insurance.
